Lifesaving Care in Action: Noel’s Journey to Recovery

Goochland Pet Lovers

Noel arrived in crisis. She was injured, frightened, and in pain after what was suspected to be a traumatic accident. In those first moments, her future was uncertain and the full extent of her injuries was still unknown. What was clear was that she needed immediate, advanced medical care to have any chance at recovery.

She was first evaluated at a veterinary ER, where it was determined that her injuries were severe. From there, she was transferred to Partner Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center Richmond for specialized treatment. There, Noel underwent urgent spinal surgery performed by James River Veterinary Surgery, a critical step in giving her the chance to walk, heal, and live without pain.

Noel’s story is one of many made possible through the Dr. Lori L. Elliott Medical Fund. The fund ensures that shelter animals with complex medical needs are not limited by financial barriers when lifesaving care is required. It helps bridge the gap between basic shelter medicine and the advanced treatment some animals need to recover and thrive. This includes diagnostics, specialty equipment, emergency stabilization, surgical intervention, and rehabilitation services that would otherwise not be possible.

For animals like Noel, that support is the difference between uncertainty and a second chance.

Following her surgery and dedicated rehabilitation, Noel made a full recovery and successfully completed her physical therapy. Today she is living comfortably and has regained her strength, mobility, and quality of life.

We would also like to extend sincere gratitude to former Goochland resident Dr. Keith Vetter, who generously donated $6,250 to Goochland County Animal Protection in honor of his beloved family dog, Duchess. His gift directly supported Noel’s rehabilitation after spinal stabilization surgery, helping ensure she received the care needed to fully recover.

Stories like Noel’s are a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when community generosity, dedicated veterinary teams, and the Dr. Lori L. Elliott Medical Fund come together. Together they provide hope, healing, and second chances to animals who need them most.
